Angela Barbaro-Robins
ANPA Interiors

Angela was born in Nottingham with Italian roots, educated locally until left home at 18 for a life of adventure in Hotels.

Angela rapidly rose through the ranks achieving Senior Management with one of the largest Hotel chains in Europe at that time.

In her late 20’s Angela decided to give up her career in the Hotel Industry to pursue Accountancy. Sponsored by House of Fraser Head Office in London her Accountancy training began. After several years in the Finance Industry Angela was offered a role as Managing Director for a multinational partially based in the UK and Italy.

Parallel to her working life for the last 20 years Angela has invested in the property market of which many of these have been run down period properties ripe for renovation, taking a keen interest in all of the design aspects. After long consideration Angela decided to fulfil her dream and change direction from the corporate life to meet her ambition of property development and design. Angela formalised her training at the Chelsea College of Art and Design and now runs in partnership with her husband a development and interiors design company, ANPA Interiors based in Nottingham.

ANPA Interiors offers the design, supply, installation and project management of all home interiors to suit traditional and contemporary styles.

Angela sits on the committee for the Nottingham Branch of the nationally acclaimed Association of Women in Property, supporting and raising the profile of women in the property industry. She also mentors Nottingham University students studying Entrepreneurship or considering going into business.

Brian Burdus
Freelance Research Interviewer

Brian Burdus was born in Nottingham more years ago than he now counts and attended a local Grammar School.

Possessing a lifelong interest in cricket and football, he now enjoys watching and encouraging his grandson play both games and, of course, acting as his personal chauffeur.

Brian joined the old Nottingham City Police and spent most of his service in uniform believing his role was to be amongst the public he had promised to always serve. He was team Secretary for the force football team, which meant he was in frequent contact with local sportsmen and small businesses. It was during this time he undertook an Open University degree and obtained his BA in the 1990’s.

He has always taken an interest in the Police Federation, which is the staff association representing all ranks from constable up to and including chief inspector and in the mid-1980’s became an association representative. Brian subsequently became Chairman of the Nottinghamshire Police Federation from 1991 to 2001 and represented the inspecting ranks of the 8 eastern region forces on the National Committee, eventually becoming the Vice Chairman of the Inspectors’ Central Committee until retirement. Both these roles involved contact with the local media, politicians, civil and public servants. Brian specialises in the area of health and safety at work.

Brian retired from the police service in 2005. When he is not spending time with his grandchildren, he is kept busy as trustee for Age Concern Nottingham and Notts and as a freelance research interviewer for a national organisation doing work on many large and varied social research issues.

Ron Coles
Retired Radio Manager & Consultant

Ron joined Radio Leicester shortly after its launch. In a twelve year period with the Corporation he worked in mainstream BBC radio departments - including the current affairs sequences as a producer/reporter on Today, Newsdesk, The World Tonight and The Financial World Tonight and on Newsbeat, Radio 1, as well as training producers for the networks. Ron was later appointed Programme Organiser at Radio Nottingham, then Manager BBC Radio Sheffield.

In 1980 he was appointed Managing Director, Radio Trent, where he launched additional services for Leicester and Derby, and the first regional 24-hour Gold service, GEM-AM. After a merger he also became responsible for stations in Birmingham and Coventry. He led the team, which floated the company, gaining a full stock market listing for Midlands Radio plc in 1990.

As a broadcasting consultant, Ron’s client list included many of the major radio groups. He also chaired the ‘Inquiry into Manx Radio’ for the Government of the Isle of Man. He played a key role in Border Television’s move into commercial radio, and became MD of the Nottingham station.

Ron was appointed Director of Saga Radio in March of 1999. He launched PrimeTime Radio and SAGA Radio. Both stations won the Sony Radio Academy Gold Award for Digital Station of the Year in successive years. Saga was also awarded four large FM licences serving the West Midlands, East Midlands, Glasgow and the North East of England.

Ron has served the radio industry at national level. A Member of Council of the Association of Independent Radio Companies from 1982-1992, he was Chairman 1986-87. A member and former Chairman of the Radio Academy he was awarded a Fellowship in 1998. He is also a Fellow of the Royal Society of Arts.

Hilary Frances Taylor
BA, B.Arch, ARB (UK)

Hilary was born locally and attended the Queen Elizabeths Girls Grammer School, before embarking on study at the University of Newcastle Upon Tyne in1982, where she gained both her Bachelor of Arts in Architecture and Bachelor of Architecture Degrees. She gained her Part III professional qualifications in 1989, to be recognised by the Architects Registration Board (UK) in the same year.

Hilary worked at Winskell Architects in Newcastle, Benoys in Newark and Hadfield Cawkwell Davidson in Sheffield before joining Nottingham based Maber Architects in 1992.

Mabers are a dedicated team of architects developing innovative and contemporary design – seeking to deliver sustainable and creative solutions that provide a positive contribution to the built environment. 

Since joining Mabers Hilary has worked on a wide variety of projects both commercial and residential, in both the East Midlands and nationally. Her portfolio covers all disciplines from new build to refurbishment - developing projects from concept to completion with an excellent understanding of liaising with clients, developers, local authorities, contractors and specialist manufacturers.

Hilary became an Associate Director in 2005 and with her team is now promoting Interior Architecture within the commercial arena for Mabers.

She presently acts as Treasurer for the Nottingham Branch of the nationally acclaimed Association of Women in Property and is an founder Member of Nottingham Women in Construction – both of which are forums for professional women in property and construction to exchange views, gain knowledge and create business opportunities. She is also a member of ‘Interact’ a Construction Consultants networking vehicle.

Hilary’s interests are varied – as a Member of Mansfield Rugby Club and a keen supporter of Leicester Tigers; rugby is top of the list – demonstrated by traveling to Australia in 2003 for the World Cup Series. Cricket remains a favorite having attended all Test Matches at Trent Bridge since 1993.

Rt Rev Anthony Porter
Bishop of Sherwood
Diocese of Southwell

A former sportsman with a passion for sharing faith with ordinary people became the Bishop of Sherwood on 21 March 2006.

Tony has a wide range of experience of working in tough urban areas and spent eight years reviving a declining church in the Bacup area of Manchester. He also had a vast experience and heavy involvement in life outside the institutional church; his Chaplaincy to Manchester Police, his Chaplaincy to Manchester City Football Club and his media involvement.

Tony was himself a sportsman having played hockey for England Schoolboys and gained a Blue while at Oxford. Through this he became actively involved in the organisations to support Christians in the sporting world, and was Chairman of "Christians in Sport".

He studied Theology at Ridley Hall, Cambridge. His first curacy was in Edgware, Nth London and then he moved to Haughton Green, Manchester. In 1983 he became priest-in-charge at Bacup and then in 1991 became Rector of Holy Trinity Rusholme, also in Manchester and on the edge of Moss Side. Tony stayed in Rusholme until he became the Bishop of Sherwood. Tony is married to Lucille and has four children and one grandchild.

Steve Upcraft
Head of Business Development
Nottingham University

Steve Upcraft has 25 years experience of managing engineering and product design businesses, additionally, he has, for the last 10 years worked at the University of Nottingham in various knowledge transfer roles. Currently, as Head of Business Development at the Institute for Enterprise and Innovation, Steve is responsible for encouraging greater involvement of local and regional businesses with the university and assisting academic staff to work with local businesses. His team works with students and Nottingham entrepreneurs wanting to start their own businesses and Steve has, for a number of years, assisted Connect Midlands in assessing early stage businesses for 'investment readiness' prior to them trying to secure second and third round funding.
